The Government promulgated the “Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050” in 2021, setting out the net-zero electricity generation, energy saving and green buildings, green transport and waste reduction as four major decarbonisation strategies, striving to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050. One of the key measures under “Waste reduction” is to regulate disposable plastic tableware in phases.
Throwing away takeaway containers after being used once is such a waste
Actually, bringing my own food containers is very convenient!
To encourage eateries to welcome the public to bring their own containers or use reusable container lending services when ordering takeaways, and facilitate the public to identify and access such waste-reducing eateries to reduce the use of disposable plastic containers and other disposable containers for takeaway meals, the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) and the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) launched the “Bring Your Own Containers (BYOC) Eateries” Scheme in September 2023. Enrolment for the Scheme is accepted all year round and free of charge.
Participating eateries will be granted with the “BYOC Eateries” Scheme Stickers for displaying in the premises and their promotion for public identification. It also serves to affirm the contribution of participating eateries to social responsibility. Additionally, the name, logo and address of participating eateries will also be announced on the website of “BYOC Eateries” Scheme to facilitate the access by members of the public.
We suggest eateries to keep a simple record whenever a customer uses their own container or a reusable container lending service, to facilitate consolidation of our waste reduction achievements periodically.
We also encourage eateries to consider offering some instant incentives to attract more members of the public to join in waste reduction efforts.
The “BYOC Eateries” status will be valid for two years. The secretariat will contact participating eateries before the expiry to discuss renewal arrangements.
Let’s join hands to practice green living, change our habits to order takeaway without disposable containers! Participate in the BYOC Eateries Scheme, not only contributing to the environment, but also significantly saving costs. Take action now!
